Nutrition is the process of taking in food and converting it into energy and other vital nutrients required for life.

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing or is a vital aspect of overall wellbeing and it is no secret that a healthy diet plays a significant role in maintaining a sound mind. The food we eat has a profound impact on our mental health, influencing our mood, energy levels and overall cognitive function.

A healthy balanced diet is crucial for ensuring good health. This implies inclusion of both macronutrients and micronutrients.

Macronutrients include;

  • Carbohydrates these are energy giving foods like; grains, bread, rice, legumes, etc.

  • Proteins; these are body building foods like; dairy products, eggs, meat, fish liver, etc.

  • Fats; these support cell function like; peanut butter, ghee, olive oil palm oil, chicken skin, etc.

Micronutrients include;

  • Vitamins include grapes, oranges, bananas, mangoes, apples, etc.

  • Protein food like dairy products, eggs, meat, fish, liver, etc.

Benefits of good nutrition;

  • Boosts immunity and supports all body systems & their functions.

  • Helps us think and feel more alert.

  • Improves concentration and attention span.

  • In children; supports brain development and cognitive development.

The right nutrients to eat to achieve good nutrition are both macronutrients that include carbohydrates, proteins, fats and micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals.

How to achieve a good nutrition;

This is through consistently choosing the right nutrients in their right amount, eating at the right time and this depends on your age, gender, activity level and health status.

Effects of poor nutrition on mental health

Several nutritional deficiencies such as vitamin B12, B9 (folate)zinc can cause symptoms of depression and dementia such as low mood, fatigue, cognitive decline & irritability.

  • It can also lead to decline in thinking.

  • Poor IQ levels.

  • Poor school achievement.

  • Greater behavioral problems since the brain controls most of the body systems.

Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining optimal mental health, by incorporating whole foods and essential micronutrients into our diets.

We can support a healthy gut-brain axis, promote mental clarity, reduce the risk of mental health disorders.

Remember a balanced diet is just the beginning-combine it with regular exercise, sufficient sleep and stress management techniques for a holistic approach to mental wellness.
